The Hot Wire CNC Foam Cutter
The hot wire cnc foam cutter is an excellent machine for cutting expanded (EPS) or extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) in many applications. They use an electrically heated cutting wire that is not in contact with the foam material, resulting in superior surface finish and no dust accumulation. The basic machines come with a standard NiCr cutting wire that should last for approx. 8-10 hours of use. It is recommended to upgrade to the Titanium Alloy Wire which is much stronger and longer lasting (on average it lasts 5-6 times longer than NiCr). It can be used with a single or a dual wire and allows for higher cutting speeds and quality. The Titanium wire is available as an option on all our foam cutting machines 1.3 meter wide or wider.

The machines can be controlled with the open-source Grbl controller, a version of which was modified for hotwire cutting by Daniel Rascio. It is designed to be simple and easy to use. It supports independent jogging control of all axis including homing and a G-code graph visualization tool. It is compatible with the Raspberry Pi, but can also be run on a PC using a parallel port adapter. The software can also generate the necessary G-code for a particular wing shape from a database of airfoils in.dat format and can even support washout.
