Designing Kenilworth: Exploring the Creative Vision of a Local Architect

Joseph Sears’ dream for the Kenilworth community was a lively, social club – not another exclusive private club for the wealthy, but an open forum to encourage civic and societal engagement. He envisioned streets platted to maximize sunlight, utility lines placed underground, no fences or alleys allowed, high construction standards and generous park lands.

The picturesque qualities of the ruins at Kenilworth were celebrated throughout the 19th century. Dugdale’s account influenced many of the more creative and imaginative responses to the ruin, such as the scene that Sophia Lee set in her historical Gothic romance, The Recess; or, A Tale of Other Times (1785-3) when her heroine Matilda visits Lord Leicester’s decaying castle.
